SUSTAINABLE RESPONSE (Issue date: 26 November 2009)
The Draft Flood and Water Management Bill aims to make sustainable drainage systems (SUDS) mandatory on all new developments, with major potential for expanding the use of concrete block permeable paving. As part of the consultation process for the Draft Bill, Interpave has submitted a detailed response highlighting two particularly important considerations.
SUSTAINABLE DRAINAGE NOW (Issue date: 13 November 2009)
Implementation of new legislation to make sustainable drainage systems (SUDS) mandatory on all new developments is threatened with delays. But there is no reason why concrete block permeable paving, an established SUDS technique, cannot be used more extensively now to satisfy existing planning policies and other requirements.
A brand new issue of the digital magazine e:Pave has been published covering the latest developments in urban design, architecture, landscaping, sustainability and civil engineering – all with a paving focus.
MASTERPLANNING WITH PAVING (Issue date: 11 May 2009)
The trade association Interpave has just published a new case study of the award winning Accordia housing project in Cambridge, focusing on external
surfaces. It explores the practical application of current approaches to masterplanning, urban design and ‘place shaping’, discussed in another, recent
Interpave publication Planning with Paving.

THE FUTURE OF PAVING IS PERMEABLE (Issue date: 30 April 2009)
New draft legislation will make sustainable drainage systems (SUDS) mandatory on all new developments within 2 years, and use of concrete block permeable paving – the most versatile SUDS technique – is set to grow rapidly to satisfy this requirement.
A Health and Safety Executive campaign, to prevent health problems resulting from silica dust, highlights Interpave's good practice guidance for the use of precast concrete paving and kerb products on site.
GOVERNMENT ACTION ON FLOODING (Issue date: 23 December 2008)
Interpave welcomes Environment Minister Hilary Benn's recent announcement of extra funding for local authorities to help deal with surface water flooding in response to the Pitt Report, but warns that other important measures highlighted by Pitt also need to be addressed urgently.
THE PAVING INFORMATION RESOURCE (Issue date: 10 November 2008)
Recognised as the definitive information resource for the paved environment - with over 120,000 technical documents already downloaded this year alone - Interpave's website www.paving.org.uk has been expanded to meet the latest industry needs.
UNDERSTANDING PERMEABLE PAVING (Issue date: 15 September 2008)
The trade association Interpave has just published an important new 20-page document, intended to help all those involved with the development process - including designers, developers and planning, building control and adoption officers - understand permeable paving, which is set for rapid future growth.

GOVERNMENT ACTS ON FRONT GARDENS (Issue date: 12 September 2008)
Originally part of the government's water strategy launched in February, new planning rules will apply from 1 October, supported by a Guidance document from Communities and Local Government, and the Environment Agency. They aim to encourage homeowners to use permeable paving, rain gardens and similar sustainable methods when installing new or replacing existing paving in front gardens.
The recently launched BRE 'Green Guide to Specification' provides independent endorsement of the low environmental impact of precast concrete paving, particularly in comparison with imported materials.
INDUSTRY RESPONDS TO GOVERNMENT ON SUDS (Issue date: 23 May 2008)
The consultation process forming a central part of the government's water strategy for England has highlighted important issues for sustainable development. The trade association Interpave, which represents all the major precast concrete paving manufacturers and champions permeable paving, has published its response to the government proposals with the aim of ensuring that they can be delivered realistically and clearing up conflicts with other regulations.
To coincide with the launch of an important Health and Safety Executive initiative, the trade association Interpave has just published a Case Study on efficient design for safe construction using precast concrete kerbs.
NEW GOVERNMENT ACTION ON SUDS (Issue date: 08 February 2008)
The government's water strategy for England was launched by Environment Secretary Hilary Benn on 7 February. Interpave welcomes this initiative and has the tools to help designers, developers and home owners meet the new sustainable surface drainage requirements.
ADOPTING SUSTAINABLE PRACTICE (Issue date: 01 February 2008)
Concrete block permeable paving continues to grow in popularity with recent government planning requirements demanding Sustainable Drainage Systems (SUDS). New guidance is now available for all those involved in the development process to help achieve successful local authority adoption.
GOVERNMENT ACTION ON FRONT GARDENS (Issue date: 12 February 2008)
Environment Secretary Hilary Benn launched the government’s water strategy for England on 7 February, which includes important new requirements for paving in front gardens to existing and new homes. The trade association Interpave welcomes this initiative and already has guidance available to help garden designers and home-owners meet the new requirements.
A completely new, Fourth Edition of the Manual ' Heavy Duty Pavements - The Structural Design of Heavy Duty Pavements for Ports and Other Industries' has now been published by Interpave. The Manual can used to design pavements subjected to highway loading or greater, up to the maximum loads encountered on port and other heavy duty pavements. With a 30-year pedigree, it is regarded as the benchmark by which other heavy duty pavement design methods are evaluated.
A brand new issue of Pave-It magazine covers the latest developments in urban design, architecture, landscaping, sustainability and civil engineering with a paving focus.
Interpave has launched its new website at www.paving.org.uk providing the definitive information resource for the paved environment. Apart from a fresh new look, the site has been designed to make it easier for users to find just what they need from the extensive bank of PDF downloads.
As part of its drive to develop
permeable paving technology - a central component
of Sustainable Drainage Systems (SUDS) - the trade
association Interpave is the main sponsor of this
year's SUDSnet National Conference.
A programme of training courses covering all aspects of paving and hard landscaping is being run by The Hard Landscaping Training Group, an initiative funded by CITB and supported by industry.
Machine installation of concrete block paving is already well established for large commercial projects, enabling tight deadlines to be met and minimising 'down-time'. But the same technology is also becoming popular for quite small projects of all types with a growing range of paving designs available.
Much has happened in recent months to mould our paved environment, ranging from the government's Manual for Streets launched at the end of March, to the latest thinking from an international conference in San Francisco. These topics and more are covered in a brand new issue of Pave-It magazine - available free of charge to all those involved in urban design, hard landscaping, civil engineering and indeed any form of paving.
Straightforward design guidance has just been published on-line to help home-owners, garden designers and contractors install paths, patios and driveways using 'sustainable drainage' principles. It is also intended to allay concerns of some local authorities about the effects of paving-over front gardens.
Concrete block paving meets today's 'Modern Methods of Construction' requirements for fully engineered, prefabricated products but the increasing use of efficient, fully mechanized site processes adds to this - as demonstrated at Birmingham's National Exhibition Centre car parks.
